You know it’s a bad moving day when

August 15th, 2006

Please go over to my mom’s blog and show her some love, because the poor woman could really use some right now. Yesterday’s move is a very long and ugly story, one of those depressing tales that leave you pretty sure that people are basically terrible. You know it’s a bad moving day when it ends with the calmest, most nonconfrontational guy in the world (David) grabbing papers out of the foreman’s hand (mysterious “paperwork” that the foreman refused to hand over), then calling the foreman a [bleeping] con man and telling him to get the [bleep] out of his mother-in-law’s apartment.

David and my mom were up all night—the movers didn’t show up at my mom’s new place until 4am, after lying for hours (when they bothered to answer their cellphones) about where they were and why they weren’t where they were supposed to be. They rigged it so their “12-hour” estimated job turned into a nearly 24-hour bullying scam.

David and my now completely traumatized mother came back to our place a little before 7am. David had to go right to work (after a triple-shot latte and a shower), and my mom is upstairs curled up in a little ball on Sophie’s bed.

It’s bad.

So if you have a minute, and any good words, my mama needs you.

Oh my gosh, that’s horrible. Poor Mater!

Ugh. So after all that, no wonder there’s no new painting of the day. (Although I can just imagine the series going from fruit and flowers to a sudden gory, blood-splattered version of The Scream, then back to friendly Berkshires scenes again in a day or two.)

I’m sorry that you and David and the Mater had to go through that. I hope that you and/or the Mater are going to use your blogs to give that shady company a public shaming–when you’re over the trauma, that is.

At least the Mater is in a good, friendly, safe place now. I know that, despite the horrible start, she’ll feel very welcome and at home in the Berkshires!

oh my dear give her a big hug - or rather have those lovely girls give her many big hugs.

to empathize i had the worst moving day of my life last year - on the day that Katrina hit New Orleans to boot and i had a sister living in one of the flooded areas - mine started at 7 am and ended at 12 am with tremendous overcharges at 1145pm … and six huge men looming over me at the bank card machine.

    sigh

i can so totally sympathize. my deepest condolences.

but thank good ness for your husband!

I am seriously just so sad and angry that someone could do such a thing to someone as sweet and loving and trusting as your Mom.
And I am so thankful she has you and David and the girls to support and love her through all this.
I wish I could do more……would donations help? It is all I can think of right now…..

A friend of mine recently moved down from Mass to my area and the movers LOST half her stuff…including ALL her clothes. Seriously. She has one small box of summer stuff and that’s it. Imagin trying to go on a job interview in shorts and a tank top.

When she tried to call the company to find the stuff, the woman said “it’s lost. You’re never getting it back…so sue us” and then hung up the phone. What is it with your state and people moving???

    p.s. - your husband’s a keeper!

Movers are evil incarnate. It’s always the old “bait and switch” and by then they have your stuff, so who are you to argue?! Evil, evil, evil. We had a horrible moving experience years ago, and I still get all up in “listen Bucko!” mode when I think about it.

However, I did learn a lot from that experience about how to deal with moving companies and get SOME justice. If you email me, I will be happy to share my phone number and tell you what I learned (a lot depends on whether it was a small local job, or a national company, unfortunately).

I’ll go to leave a note. She should leave a message on movingscam.com so other people are aware of the bastards.

I showed her some love- I’m so sorry that happened to her. What horrible people there are in this world.

I’ve been thinking about all of you all day. It just isn’t fair. But you guys are survivors and overcomers. And geogirl is on the money - David, you are a hero and a gilt-edged Keeper.

My work account won’t let me leave comments on some blogs (your sweet Mom’s included!) so I’ll leave my sympathies here!
I’m so sorry it all went wonky…you are the last people in the world to deserve that!
But maybe is a karmic thing…you have to suffer to get the good stuff?
I know, lame, but I have to try something! Sending my love to all of you!

I’ve been over to the Mater’s, left good vibes, and been cheered by her story of playing with Sophie and the horses. I hope things pick up for the better, soon.

I’m aghast at the moving story: never heard anything like it. If I lived somewhere with movers like that I’d crate up a load of old cheese and fish and let the buggers keep it for as long as they wanted.

Sometime, when all this has passed, I’ll relate the story of our move to North Adams from NYC. Very similar. And my wife still can’t talk about it.
For now, suffice it to say that it drove a grown man to tears of rage and frustration when all was said and done.

So… you hired several strapping, muscular, men to help you move, and you ended up getting screwed.

    Who would’ve seen that coming?

SONSofbitches. I’m off my meds right now, and lookin’ for a fight. I’d be happy to Mater’s stunt double. This Kentucky girl can kick ass with the best of them.
