Porchlight Paintings: Take My Husband, Please

July 31st, 2006

So I have this husband, see, and not only is he a great cook, he’s a wonderful oil painter. Late at night, he sits on our back porch and paints until way too late, and in the morning, there is some new lovely little painting sitting out on the table.

So he has this dream, see, and like most grand and glorious dreams, it begins with a 5″ x 5″ oil painting on gessobord. David is doing a small painting every other day, his first step on his way to being a well-regarded working artist who can support his family and look cute and scruffy in paint-splattered flannel shirts in a drafty art studio in a weathered New England barn.

(Okay, so the second half of the dream is mine. He looks so cute in paint-splattered flannel.)

Keep the dream alive and thriving! Support an as-yet unknown but very talented Canadian painter! You can start by visiting David’s every-other-day painting site, Porchlight Paintings: http://www.porchlightpaintings.blogspot.com.

If you see something you like, follow the link from Porchlight Paintings to eBay, and bid, bid, bid. Bid on a humble fruit. Bid on a Berkshire landscape. And right now, for a limited time only, YOU’LL RECEIVE A FREE HAIKU WITH YOUR PAINTING! No other working artist today is offering such a delectable combo of literary and fine arts! The haiku will be lovingly crafted by a skilled blogger, and if you want it done in pink sparkle calligraphy, your wish can be accommodated. We believe in making wishes come true.

At the very least, please join David’s Google Group mailing list over at Porchlight Paintings, and you’ll receive the occasional email inviting you to stop by and see his latest batch of paintings. It’s like being part of the Mickey Mouse Club, except it’s for grownups and you don’t get black felt ears or the chance to woo the still-virginal Britney Spears.

Please support a starving artist and his family of soot-smeared urchins! Collect now, collect early, and be the envy of your friends and family with your rare Canadian art collection as it appreciates exponentially in value over the years!

We would sure appreciate the support. Come on by!

Very nice. I love the painting of the actual porchlight as well. I’m sure the haikus will be lovely as well…

Apparently, “as well” is my buzz phrase for the day. Sorry about that.

I don’t know… the subject matter is a little risque for my tastes…

I mean, you know… a pear. Children might see this, after all. Though I appreciate all the symbolic social commentary embroiled in the artist’s work, there are such things as standards of decency.

Maybe if he could just tone it down a little… maybe something like… I don’t know… a piece of lettuce. Something with “family appeal”. Think it over.

You would probably be a better cook if your husband wasn’t monopolizing all of the fresh fruits and veggies to use as art props. ;-) But hopefully if David sells more of his beautiful paintings, you’ll all be able to afford to eat out all the time!

Simple and pretty. I likes the fruit.

Spot, something with family “appeal” would have to be a banana. And that’s certainly more risque than a pear.

Seriously, this is a brilliant idea!

Folks, I’ve seen David’s oil miniatures and they are amazing! There should be at least one in every humble home.

Please check his work out and help feed the family!

I like the idea of a bonus Haiku. I am sure the Haikus will be as sweet and reflective as the paintings.

Here in NYC, we post Honkus. A Honku is like a Haiku, but it is about traffic noise:

    You from New Jersey
honking in front of my house
    in your SUV

    Terrorism is
    a Lincoln Continental
    leaning on the horn

    Oh, Jeezus Chrysler
what’s all the damned honking Ford?
    please shut the truck up!

Jenn, you should create a book of wonderfully funny Haikus about PARENTING. That would sell.

Coincidentally, I just blogged about the haikus Jenn and I composed while on a vacation to London with Hannah two years ago … excerpts are now at my blog.

ROTFLOL, MoTBB - your haiku is great and so appropriate for living in the city!

He finishes those in one night? Wow, I’m impressed.
They are all very good. The man has talent.

Love the Haiku descriptions too. Do we HAVE to buy a painting to see the poems?

He does in one night what I couldn’t even dream of in the 4+ years that I attended one art program or another. Lovely! I’m saving my pennies.

in one night? wow! i think even a piece of lettuce would look enticing if david painted it…all those paintings of fruit are making me hungry though…:)

  • 17. David  |  August 3rd, 2006 at 2:51 pm

Hi Kathleen — I’d be happy to paint you a bird house. If you join my google group, then I’ll write and we can discuss details.

Way to make me feel inadequate. I’m lucky if I shower every other day… His work is mighty purty and I am impressed.
The Haiku’s well they’re just the cherry.
MOTBB- thanks for making me spit beer all over my screen.

    your paintings are simply beautiful

I just happened on this wonderful site today and love both the pear and sunflower. Off to Ebay next

I was tickled by the suggestion that a piece of lettuce would be less risque than a pear.

Obviuosly you haven’t met my brother-in-law who delights in breaking the ice in restaurants with the waitresses or hostess by asking, “Have you heard about the honeymoon sandwich ?”
Of course they say they haven’t and his response is “It’s lettuce alone!”

If I had a dollar for each time I’ve hear that corny joke, I’d be well on my way to being able to afford one of those wonderful paintings.

The second half of your dream sounded just fine! What a wonderfully hilarious blog you write - shall enjoy mining the archives.

    Love the pear.
