The Flower, a poem by Sophie
July 23rd, 2006
Say, ‘Sophie writed this.’ —Sophie
The Flower
Flowers are pretty
Flowers are nice
Pick the flower and it will die
Keep them in the field
and they’ll stay very safe
Then leave them in the garden
and look at them as their friend

That is a precious poem, my daughter Moira loves flowers too. Our children are incredible, even at this young age. Keep those poems coming Sophie, you definitely have a your mom’s writing skills.

Today a poppy field, tomorrow iambic pentameter :>)
Gosh darn it … I’m smiling big time at this end. She’ll be writing haiku in no time at all! I can’t wait to get up there.
Tell Sophie that Babci is very very proud of her :>)

this Sophie girl, she’s a keeper!

And the best part is that she actually knows what she’s saying. Megan is 4 and can recite every line from Shrek 1 and 2, Shark Tale, and a couple of others verbatim, but has no clue, half the time, what she’s saying!
Seems your Sophie is a very talented girl!

I see talent! Going to be just like Mom!

Sophie takes after her mama, I see.

Raising a little Edna St. Vincent Millay fan, huh? Seriously, that’s an amazing concept for her to grasp at this age: that you can admire something without taking it for yourself. Nice job, Mama!

A Poem for Sophie
Though you know that I’m ever-so-loathe to attack her
The fact still remains, that your mom is a slacker
She’s writing this blog, filled with anecdotes quaint
She’s making big bucks and, my darling, you ain’t.
“You can write a nice poem for my blog!” your mom said.
(Meanwhile she spent all of Friday in bed)
My readers will love it, they’ll say so! You’ll see!
(“Best of all,” your mom thought, “is that you’ll work for free!”)
“Take these crayons” said mom, “you can draw me a flower”
While mom relaxed… drinking Jim Beam, in the shower.
“Make sure that your poem is all fluffy and sweet.
When you’re done with that, make Daddy something to eat.”
“Put the clothes in the wash, and the plates in the sink,
Then shampoo your sister, she’s starting to stink.”
“Then wash all the windows and sweep all the floors,
Strip the lead paint from the edging and doors.”
“The garden needs weeding, you can harvest the squash,
The toilet needs plunging, the car needs a wash.”
“Sneak over next door and swipe some of their onions,
When you’re done with that, come here and rub all my bunions.”
“When you finish your work, take a brief nap and then,
Tomorrow I’ll let you ‘guest author’ again!”

That’s a lovely poem, Spot–probably the most nicely written report the Child Protective Services people will ever see. But I still like Sophie’s poem better, especially with the pretty picture of a flower.

You read her The BFG, by Roald Dahl, didn’t you?
I had nightmares about picking flowers for weeks after my mom read me The BFG.

Wow! Spot sure knows how to steal the spotlight!!
“Then shampoo your sister, she’s starting to stink”
Just as soon as I can quit giggling, I think I’ll have a few shots of Beam in the shower myself! haaahahahaaa!!!

Spot’s poetry is absolutely spot-on in its cadence with that of a celebrated Canadian children’s author - Phoebe Gilman. I’m hearing ‘Little Blue Ben’ and all the Jillian Jiggs stories here, (mind you, with much more snark.)

as a fellow poet I would just like to tell Sophie welcome to the fold! poets are wonderfully strange people just like everybody else, but unlike most of humanity we have an constructive verbal outlet! mom you are a lucky one in deed!!!
